Melanie Calumpad in real life, Kyla is famous as the Philippines' R&B Princess. The former child-performing champion of the now-defunct Tanghalan Ng Kampeon and member of That's Entertainment has been performing for more than two decades already. She first caught the ears of the sophisticated listeners of radio station DWRT with her debut album's test single Summertime. Mainstream music fans finally fell in love with her soothing R&B vocals when she released the Tagalog single Hanggang Ngayon. The single's music video even went on to compete in the MTV Asia Awards in the following year it was released. Kyla went on to release four more albums after Way To Your Heart, Her albums churned hit songs like I Feel For You, the Ogie Alcasid-penned I Will Be There, the Jamir Garcia-penned Bounce and a few remakes like Michael Jackon's Human Nature and Ella Mae Saison's If The Feeling Is Gone. She continued her winning streak when R&B Prince Jay R and Jimmy Martinez composed the single Not Your Ordinary Girl for her. The song eventually became the title of her 2005 album. Her legion of fans got a taste of Kyla's songwriting prowess via her 2006 single Beautiful Days. Four years of remake singles would pass until she shared with the industry her most mature effort to date via Mahal Kita ('Di Mo Ba Pansin) from the album Private Affair. After 8 studio albums, Kyla finally released her 2-disc greatest hits compilation dubbed as the Essence of Soul, a collection of 27 of her hit songs and album tracks with a bonus duet with Malaysian sensation Hazami.
